Here we can trace the history of local
government in the village. We have subsections on the Local Board,
which surprising for a relatively small village, evolved into an Urban
District Council and which ultimately in 1936 became the Parish Council.
The information is primarily taken from newspaper sources instead of minutes as the papers
tended to report on the more interesting aspects of the meetings.
Public health was a matter of great concern for our forefathers and
we can read with the benefit of a modern understanding of basic hygiene,
the horrors of frequent infant mortality due to the recurring infectious
diseases, often caused by terrible sanitary conditions.
