Receipts – Quorndon Local Board and Barrow on Soar Poor Law Union

The two receipts below are dated 24th August 1868 and 8th March 1876 respectively.

Both are very flimsy and it is amazing that they have survived over 150 years, as they were not designed as long-term important documents.

The first receipt is for rates and was issued by Quorndon Local Board which was created in 1864. The money was received from Rev Dalby, although a different name was entered first and has been struck through. It is not known exactly who the Rev Dalby is; there were Dalbys in Quorn at this time, but they were joiners.

The second receipt was issued by Barrow on Soar Poor Law Union, which was created in 1834 and covered more than 30 parishes, funding the workhouse and some ‘out relief’.
The cash was received from Mr North, possibly ‘for Dalby’. Mr North was the postmaster.

The person who issued the receipts is Joseph Camm who was born in Quorn in 1811 and had three wives and thirteen children. He held many important positions within the village, including Head of Quorn National School 1830 to 1853, map & plan maker, overseer of the poor 1852 to 1879, Manager of the Quorndon and Mountsorrel Gas, Coke and Coal Company 1853 to 1883, Superintendent Registrar and Clerk to the Local Board. Some of these duties he later passed on to one of his sons James.
