Quorn Electoral and Tax Rolls

This section includes a range of electoral and tax records.

Tax records include not only old hearth tax records, but also valuable Finance Act records from 1910.

Poll books were an early form of electoral rolls when only a very limited number of people were allowed to vote, this entitlement was based largely on land holdings.

Electoral rolls, by definition only include those people entitled to vote. However, despite this limitation, they provide a valuable link between family names and addresses within an area - covering that sometimes difficult period after the latest released census returns. The earliest electoral rolls, eg 1915, restrict the right to vote to one voter per householder, so would exclude adult sons living at home or heads of shared households. The early rolls are also produced in alphabetical order of surname, and no house numbers are included. This is not as useful as later electoral rolls, which are in street (house) order. Electoral Rolls after 1924 include most house numbers and some house names. House numbers are usually very useful, although it must be borne in mind that some streets have been renumbered more than once, eg Chaveney Road.

Electoral Registers compiled after the 1918 Representation of the People Act, include nearly twice as many people as in, (for example), 1915. Women over 30 now had the right to vote, but this was still subject to certain residence conditions that did not apply to men. It would not be until the 1928 Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act, that women would get complete equality in voting rights.
