1798 Tax Records - Quorndon and Welliss [Wellasses]
This record from 1798, in the reign of George III is headed:
“County of Leicester Parish of Quorndon & Welliss
An Assessment made in pursuance of an Act of Parliament passed in the 38th Year of His Majesty’s Reign, for granting and Aid to His Majesty by a Land Tax to be raised in Great Britain, for the Service of the Year 1798.”
The transcription process was very challenging and transcriptions have been made with the utmost care, by comparing individual letters to similar letters within the document and referring to existing records from the period. Despite all this, complete accuracy can obviously not be guaranteed.
Notes:
1) The Wellasses were an area of land in Quorn to the south-east, towards Woodhouse.
2) Abbreviations of forenames, eg Wm, Jno, Jos, etc, have been expanded, eg William, John, Joseph etc
3) At the end of the entries the total of the assessment is given as £110 - 3 shillings - 4 pence. However (with double and triple checking!) the actual total only adds up to £108 - 14 shillings - 9 pence; a difference of £1 - 8 shillings - 7 pence. The reason is not obvious.
NB. There were 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound.
4) It is not known exactly what the ‘Register Number’ or ‘Date of Contract’ mean, or why some lines have entries, but others don’t.
5) The ‘Sum Assessed’ is believed to be the amount of tax due. In some places it is said that the tax was based on 4 shillings in £1 of land value (ie 20%), but this cannot be corroborated.
