Rat Week in Quorn!
Did you know that there used to be a National Rat Week, usually held early in November? It was firmly established by 1920 and continued into WW2. There were references to National Rat Week in both Quorn Urban District Council records and those of the later Quorn Parish Council, some of which made it into the press:

FERRETS LOST IN DUMP
QUORN RAT-CATCHOR'S MISFORTUNE
Alderman G. W. Lloyd-James reported to Quorn Urban Council, that during operations at Quorn, in the National Rat Week campaign, Mr. R. T. Gartshore, had his ferrets in a rat-infested dump, accidentally destroyed by being burnt out.
Mr. Lucas E. Rumsey, clerk to the County Council, on hearing of this misfortune. had "passed the hat round" his councillors and collected two guineas (£2.10) for Mr. Gartshore.
The Quorn clerk was requested to send a letter of appreciation to Mr. Rumsey.

LOSS OF FERRETS
QUORN COUNCIL THANKS MR. MURRAY RUMSEY
Mr. T. C. Dexter, of Farnham Street, Quorn, a member of Quorn U.D.C., writes with reference to the loss of ferrets by Mr. R. T. Gartshore:
"The ferrets were lost in a fire some two months ago, when the shed in which they were kept was burnt out, and not in a dump during Rat Week.
"At the meeting of Quorn U.D.C. on Tuesday, November 6, a letter was read, not from Mr. Lucas E. Rumsey, but from Mr. Murray Rumsey, well known in Quorn for his many kindly acts, stating that he had collected the sum of £2 2s. among the members and officers of the U.D.C. and that this sum had been handed to Mr. Gartshore.
"A letter from Mr. Gartshore, thanking the subscribers, was also read, and the Council very heartily thanked Mr. Murray Rumsey for his effort in the matter."

QUORN COUNCIL AND DAMAGE BY RATS
Quorn Parish Council has received a number of complaints from residents in respect of depredations caused by rats.
At last night's meeting of the council a circular letter from the Leicestershire County Council was read on the subject of National Rat Week, and it was decided to supply local land and property owners with leaflets giving instructions how to get rid of the pests.
