St Bartholomew’s Parish Registers, Baptisms 1577 to 1799, Alphabetical Index
St Bartholomew’s Parish Register burial entries from 1577 to 1799 have been transcribed by the Museum Team. This document presents the main transcription in the form of an index, ie in alphabetical order of surname.
For the register in its original order, see Artefact 1802
Please note:
• Some records have been lost or were not recorded. This applies particularly to the Commonwealth period and surrounding years, approx 1640s, 1650s, 1660s.
• Up until the calendar changed in 1751, a year was taken to be from Lady Day (25th March) to Lady Day, so 31st December 1705 would be followed by 1st January 1705, and the year would not change until 26th March.
• Remember that the spelling of names was not fixed, and they would be recorded as the minister or clerk thought at the time, eg Chaveney could be Chavney, Chaveny, Cheveny etc.
• Some forenames are in Latin; these have been transcribed as written, but a translation put in the notes column where the English equivalent is not obvious.
• Generally original spellings have been used, however some common abbreviations, eg Wm for William, Thos for Thomas, etc have been routinely expanded
• The oldest registers are very difficult to read and often have parts of pages missing. Please bear this in mind!
• Some of the early transcriptions have been transcribed from an old carbon copy of transcriptions in 1940. These have been checked as far as possible to the originals.
