Quorn Fete in aid of British Legion - 1947

Loughborough Monitor - 21st August 1947

A garden fete, organised by Quorn branch of the British Legion, and held at Quorn Court, the home of Colonel and Mrs W S N Toller, on Saturday, was opened by Lady Newtown Butler, daughter of Sir Lindsay Everard, Ratcliffe Hall, former MP for Melton. In her opening remarks, Lady Butler appealed for funds with which to furnish a new headquarters for the branch at Quorn.

Lady Butler was presented with a bouquet by four-year-old Patricia Halford, Church-lane, Quorn, whose father was killed in the war.

Colonel Sir Robert Martin president of Mountsorrel branch, proposed a vote of thanks to Lady Butler. Those present included the Countess of Lanesborough, Mrs W E Paget (Nanpantan Hall), Mr Henry Toller, Mrs Colin Ellis and Miss Elizabeth Ellis, Mrs and Mrs Percy Gee, and Dr and Mrs J A Unitt.

Colonel W S N Toller, president of Quorn branch, told the "Loughborough Monitor" how difficult it had been to find a home for the branch in Quorn, which had 330 members, together with a women's section of 150. He said negotiations were at present being carried on for the purchase of premises in Meeting-street.

The photograph shows Jackie Preston on Dolly, with a full-load of happy youngsters, at the fete.
