Quorn Floods 1977

Quorn Cross, which is a well-known danger point when there is prolonged rain, especially when Swithland Reservoir is full and overflowing into the village brook, was under about 3ft of water.
About 25 families were marooned in their homes as cellars and ground floors were inundated. Council workmen, police and residents placed sandbags at strategic positions throughout Thursday night, but their efforts were to no avail in the end.
Although the A6 trunk road was closed, some lorries came through and caused large waves which made conditions worse.
The White Horse Inn, which has known flooding in the past, was again badly hit and patrons stayed helping the licensee, Mr John Wylly, in baling operations until the early hours, but they finally had to give up.
Most people decided to remain in their homes despite police advice to leave, but two elderly women in Meeting Street were taken away by relatives.
