Banks cottages
An early photograph of the Banks cottages, demolished in the early 1970s. This photograph was taken before the road was widened and the safety railings erected.
Here, in the words of Thomas Dexter who wrote about how Quorn appeared in the 1890s, was how these cottages looked:
"Continuing along the left hand side we come to The Bank, this was an area some four feet higher than the road way on which was a row of seven or eight cottages facing the street and one or perhaps two standing at the back and approached through a passageway half way along the row of cottages. These were all owned by the Town Lands Charity and were let to people who were at least over sixty years of age, the rents were some 1/3d and some 1/6d per week.
The management was in the hands of a board of Trustees some of whom were appointed by the local council. I served a period of four years as one of the council's representatives.
At one time The Bank extended right up to the road and there was no footpath for pedestrians but increasing and faster moving traffic made it imperative that footpaths should be provided and a slice of The Bank was taken off and a footpath, little more than two feet wide was constructed."
