Thomas Rawlins Grammar School, early 1920s
Little is known about this photograph of Thomas Rawlins Grammar School that was probably taken in the early 1920s.
The headteacher standing at the back is Mr Keith Thomson and the teacher in the front row is Mr Hugo Jones, who, according to the Thomas Rawlins Trust accounts left the school in 1921.
The only pupils that can be named so far are:
1) Muriel Annie Marchant, 3rd left front row. She was born 15th March 1906, lived at 38 Barrow Road and died in 1962.
2) Muriel Olive Gamble (later Aitken), born in 1907 and died in 1984.
3) The girl 6th from the left on the front row and the boy third from the right on the back row are also thought to be members of the Gamble family, but it has not been possible to name them.
4) First left, back row (blonde) is J. Robert (Bob) Harriman. His son Mark got in touch with the museum team in October 2025 and continues: “He won a Rawlins form VI prize in 1924 for the Oxford School Certificate that was presented by Sir Arthur Wheeler (of Woodhouse). The prize was ‘The Complete Works of Shakespeare’. I have it still with the Rawlins prize certificate on the inside front cover and the Rawlins crest embossed on the back cover.
Father came from the Post Office at Woodhouse Eaves, his mother was Post and Telegraph Mistress. Walter, his father built the post office and Ellen, his mother ran it.
Father graduated from Nottingham University with a BA. He taught at Aldershot High School and then moved to Wisbech where he taught for a further 40 + years. For 22 years he was headmaster of The Queens School, a large comprehensive boys school.
He was involved with cadet and forces education. and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was created Freeman of the Borough in recognition of his services to the community and education.”
