M. Wright and Sons factory, Quorn, approx 1880

Fifteen men standing outside M. Wright and Sons factory in about 1880, possibly a little earlier. This is the earliest photograph of Wrights that the museum team have seen. The elastic webbing factory opened in Leicester in 1860 and moved to Quorn in 1870, so had been here ten years or less when this photograph was taken.

The young man third from the left on the front row is Thomas Turlington who was born in Quorn in 1861. At this time of this picture he was a teenager living with his parents. His father Charles, also born in Quorn, was a boatman transporting coal by barge. There are still Turlingtons living in Quorn today (2020).
