Elms Drive gates
Elms Drive was built in the late 1920s/early 1930s, and until about 1957 it had large white farm-type gates across the bottom (near Meeting Street). It is hard to imagine, but the artist’s impression shows roughly how the gates would look today. Chris Sharp, who remembers the gates, sketched them, and this helped to create the picture.
In reality, the road itself would have looked different, as it was not adopted by the local council until the late 1960s - the surface was rough and there were no pavements.
