The Wardle family, Farnham Street, Quorn
Following on from Artefact 1934, we have four more photographs relating to the Wardle family who lived at 27 (now no 31) Farnham Street, from about 1919 to the 1940s.
Picture 1 shows Herbert Wardle with his wife Frances and eldest daughter Ida Elizabeth Wardle.
Picture 2 was taken on the doorstep of no 27 (now 31) Farnham Street. Frances Mary Wardle nee Palmer was Herbert’s wife. The house still exists, but has been considerably modernised.
Photograph 3 was taken at Leicester Station when Herbert was a porter and before he joined the Leicester Auxiliary Corps in about 1916. He is on the middle row, third from the right. He was discharged from the auxiliary corps in 1918 after contracting Influenza, which killed hundreds of troops. He was lucky to survive, and shortly afterwards rejoined GCR as a signalman.
The fourth photograph shows Herbert in his army uniform.
