Meeting Street, Quorn
As the years go by and as Quorn Village On-line Museum continues to grow, it becomes increasingly rare to discover new historical pictures of Quorn. Whilst several photographs exist taken from roughly this position on Quorn Cross, looking down Meeting Street, this particular postcard shows some unique detail.
The postcard was published by Lilywhite Ltd, Triangle, Halifax and the photograph must have been taken sometime between 1923 and 1931. Ernest Fewkes owned his joinery business at 27 Meeting Street from 1923 to 1939, and Lilywhite moved from Halifax to Sowerby Bridge in 1931 after a fire at their premises.
The buildings on the right are a row of cottages called Alma Terrace, which were at right angles to Meeting Street. On the left is the blacksmith’s forge. There are two motor bikes and a horse and cart in the picture, but these do not narrow the dates down any further.
