Woodlands, Chaveney Road – then and now
These two very large semi detached houses were built in approximately 1904 as part of the development of Chaveney Road, which came shortly after the Great Central Railway arrived in Quorn. The pair were called ‘Woodlands' and are now 79 and 81 Chaveney Road, called Oaklands and Woodlands. They were joined together by the veranda on the first floor and the whole property was purchased by one family. The Riley’s (Samuel and Jane) lived in the left-hand side and their daughter Ellen and her husband Frederick Seal lived in the right-hand side. The older photograph shows the Riley and Seal families on the veranda in the early 1900s.
Lillian Riley, one of Ellen’s sisters, went on to marry the vicar, Henry Hunn Rumsey. Edith, another sister, devoted her life to looking after Lillian and Henry’s six children, after Lillian died when the youngest was still a baby.
