Taken prisoner but escaped - adventure of Quorn soldier

Pte. Ted Walker, son of Mr and Mrs Walker who live in Meeting-street, Quorn, was in the invasion of Sicily last year and was captured on the slopes of Mount Etna. After being a prisoner for only four hours he escaped with a friend who was killed. Pte. Walker got back to the British lines. He arrived at his home on Christmas morning on leave. Prior to joining up he was employed at the Swithland Reservoir.
Note: Ted Walker's nephew, Brian Johnson, contacted the museum and provided the following additional information:
"Uncle Ted was in the Eighth Army (Desert Rats) and has got the medal showing the 8 bar. This was put on the medal for the soldiers who fought under Monty. I am sure he was in the Black Watch hence the cap in the photo."
