Dog’s whimper led her to collapsed Quorn teacher
For 25 years a school teacher at St Bartholomew’s Primary School, Quorn, 51 year old Miss Lena Edith Sturman collapsed and died on Saturday afternoon at the home of a cousin in Coalville where she always spent her weekends.
Miss Sturman had been for a walk with her pet Dachshund “Kim” and had just returned to the house, 69 Greenhill Road, Coalville, when her cousin heard a noise in the kitchen and went to investigate. “Kim” stood by his mistress’s body, whimpering.
During the week Miss Sturman lived with a former member of St Bartholomew’s school staff, Miss E Sutton, at her home in High Street, Quorn.
Before going to Quorn she spent a short time as an uncertified teacher at Kegworth, then had a year at a training college. Miss Sturman, a keen tennis and hockey player in her youth, was a former Leicestershire county hockey player.
At St Bartholomew’s she took a keen interest in children’s games. She was also an expert needlewoman.
Headmaster Mr J Briers said today: “She was the sort of old-fashioned type of schoolteacher who will be difficult to replace. She had a tremendously high standard in everything.
